CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Discussion
The purpose of this study was to investigate the generic model of knowledge management for a commercial organization to improve the current loss of knowledge skills from the industry before they are acquired and retained. The need for knowledge management has taken toll in the last one decade in the field of business, driven by the era of knowledge where the modern economy relies on how much we exploit knowledge. Altaher (2010) suggests that “in order successfully to execute the exploitation we must have a high understanding of the existing knowledge management techniques to retain skills in organization and at the same time add value to it by building new knowledge for commercial development”.
The current employee turnover observed in the business environment should leave companies rethinking of their strategies. There are vigorous changes in the environment of which companies need to be aware of. This knowledge need to be acquired from the stakeholders, the customers, the competitors and other market players and be used to inform the restructuring of the organization.
Companies also need to be aware of the emerging forms of organizations which can be incorporated in their structures so as to ensure that they don’t lose important knowledge from their employees. The human resource management need to redefine their programs such that the work processes suit the employees as need be so that they ensure their retention and so the retention of critical knowledge aspects as well. The managers and the unit heads need to understand that improving organizational quality is not only about the people but the process. Hence, the managers need to know that they should get to manage the processes and encourage the people to manage themselves in order to deliver quality to the organization.
Conclusions
The research was guided by literature in epistemology, the current management theories, organizational management, management of change, system engineering as well as knowledge management. According to Heaidari, Khanifar & Moghimi (2011), “the integration of various concepts applied in research methodology determines; the validity of the current models of knowledge management techniques” (P. 61). The literature presented with the best models applicable in corporations of different sizes and structures in dealing with knowledge management.
Knowledge acquisition and utilization is thus an important aspect of the organization in managing its processes to achieve quality. The acquisition of the knowledge is as important as its utilization and the source of the knowledge should be varied and not limited. The knowledge management processes should be able to incorporate the employees, providing them with understanding of the system needs and functions.
In order for the corporations and companies to exist in the current competitive business environments, there is need to redefine its human resource strategies and organizational forms. There is need to focus more on managing processes other than the people, while providing flexibilities to the employees while performing their functions.
The research assumed that there was a functional model of knowledge management in the organization and that the employees knew about it and utilized its functionalities. The study also assumed that the top management was able to effectively utilize the systems in executing their functions. The limitation of the study was that it dint focus much on the processes but the organizational behavior and the system model. The delimitation was that the model was accessed and its functionalities examined and how it influences operations even though in a limited period.
Recommendations for Future Research
The study had the following recommendations for future research and for actions by key stakeholders:
- The system model implementations be carried out hand in hand with the organizational employees if it is to achieve its intended purpose in the company.
- That the knowledge acquisition should be performed both externally and internally as such will provide a better understanding of the decisions necessary for the company.
- The company restructures itself and reengineer its operations to provide flexibility for the employees so as to minimize workforce turnover.
Suggested Questions
- Are the knowledge management models implemented in the company able to give it competitive advantage over the competitors in the rapidly changing environment?
- Does the knowledge management systems provide for a solution to the employee turnover in organizations?
- Are employees appreciating the role played by the knowledge models existing within their organizations?
Interesting Hypotheses for Future Research
- The knowledge management system models in organizations are able to give it an advantage over its competitors in the business environment.
- Knowledge management models offer solutions to the organizations in the event of workforce turnover
