Introduction
Donating to the community means being able to contribute to the well-being of the community by giving some of your property. Giving to the community can be in terms of giving something tangible like money or any other property or volunteering a service that is meant to help the community. In this paper, I am going to look at what it means to give back to the community. I am going to highlight some instances I have been involved in donating to the community. Any effort I have made towards making my community better can be said to be a donation to the community.
Charitable work
I will refer to donating to the community as charitable work. Advanced English Dictionary defines charity as an activity that benefits the public at large. Therefore, any activity that is done for the good of the public can be said to be an act of donation to the community. Donating to the community is done in the view that the well-being of a community means the well-being of the individual as well. It is to be noted that before the individual becomes who he or she is, the community plays a great role in shaping him or her.
Giving back to the community could mean a simple gesture as helping a needy person in the community. People such as orphans, widows and the poor need someone from the community to offer a helping hand. When one considers the plight of such people and provides them with help in any way, such a person can be said to have made a donation to the community.
Looking at a business venture, Smith argues that a business never really takes from the community. The business is indeed, in my own term, giving to the community. He argues if a business is successful and is run with integrity, then that business is actually giving back to the community (Smith, 2013). I would argue that a successful business venture contributes a lot to the well being of the community. When a member of a community provides goods or services to his or her own community, then such a person is helping that community a lot. It is also to be noted that such a business will also provide employment to individuals from that community hence helping the employees make a living from such a venture.
Away from business, I myself have been involved in many works of charity. I have been on the forefront in offering my services to the health centre near my home. Together with my neighbors, we go for cleaning activities in the centre every weekend. During these activities, we take time to talk to the sick and encourage them. We also donate drugs to the centre as well as other materials we are able to provide.
Charitable work can take many forms. It can be donating ones land so that a hospital or any other public amenity can be constructed on it. It can also be in terms of donating one’s blood to assist those in need of it or even volunteering a service that will help the community.
Conclusion
Any activity done to help a community can be described as a donation to the community. Whatever one does that contributes to the well being of a community is a gift to the community. As it is popularly said, we do not give because we have, we give because we will. Any individual can do something that contributes to the well being of the community, whether rich or poor.
