Using Aggression Teaches Aggression 3

Summarize the research findings outlined in the report relevant to the effects of spanking on cognitive and emotional development

Spanking affects the cognitive and emotional development of children where it reduces intelligence and learning abilities. The academic performance of children at school is very low for those who are spanked due to slow cognitive development. The results of spanking are immediate but it does not give a solution to undesired behavior. The physical pain may cause emotional damage and children are not able to concentrate on what they are supposed to learn. Physical punishment affects the relationship between the child and the parent where the child becomes hostile. The most effective way of disciplining children is teaching them effective behavior for them to know the consequences of misbehavior. Spanking deprives the privileges of children; weaken the bond between parents and children as well as slowing down mental development

Explain the findings relevant to the cycle of corporal punishment and aggressive behavior

The findings relevant to the cycle of corporal punishment and aggressive behavior show that corporal punishment of toddlers increases their aggressive behavior. When children are punished at the age of 3 years, their aggressive behavior is high when they are 5 years old. Corporal punishment leads to an increase in aggressive behavior in children which make them be punished more. Those parents who reason with their children instead of punishing them when they do wrong obtain positive results. The children can also be denied privileges instead of punishing them and they will behave well and not aggressive. Foster parents should have the knowledge of the situations that children have gone through in the past such as abuse that may have affected their behavior. This makes children behave differently in case of corporal punishment and some are more aggressive compared to the others.

The corporal punishment as a risk factor for nonoptimal development

Young children bond with their caregivers in order to be secure. When parents think that their need for comfort and attention is misbehavior and punish them, they affect the attachment between them and the child. Their emotional development is affected negatively and they feel that they are rejected and unworthy. The disrupted attachment due to corporal punishment leads to withdrawal and anxiety. Negative effects of corporate punishment are experienced more in middle-aged children compared to early childhood.

Connecting the effects of spanking on aggression to reciprocal social responding?

Spanking may lead to aggressive behavior in children and when the behavior of the child is more challenging, the parents become harsher. Reciprocal links should exist between the spanking by parents and the behavior as children reach adolescence stage. A transactional model is used to examine reciprocal associations that exist between spanking and how the behavior of children changes after a long period of time. This helps to know the first development of coercive processes, examine the continuation of development and how it discontinues from early to middle childhood

Reflection on my own beliefs and experiences in reaction to the AAP article (did anything surprise you or conflict with your previous beliefs?)

I was surprised to know that a child's behavior can be molded without corporal punishment. My belief in the past was that if I spare the rod I would spoil the child. I have now understood that though children are young they are affected by verbal abuse that lowers their self-esteem. I used to believe that once a child has misbehaved, I should punish him/her immediately without negotiating. However, this should not be the case because I should teach the child how to behave well to avoid disciplinary cases.
